Wednesday. I sat down to write almost 1.5 hours ago. I’m not sure what I did but the only thing I had written was “Wednesday”. That reminded me of my daughter’s teacher a couple of years ago, Miss Nicole. She used to complain about my daughter having an attention span of about 3 seconds. What can I say? That’s like a record for me these days.
I remember I could study with the TV on, the radio and all my family around. When I was reading I was so immersed in my book/paper that I didn’t even hear the people talking to me.
Now I read the same freaking paragraph about 12 times and even like that I don’t get the meaning. It’s AWFUL!

When I finally decided to concentrate and finish today’s post, and of course I had to interrupt to look for some info, I was shocked with what I found.

Here are some screenshots I took. I didn’t dare to keep reading because I’m in the denial phase, that in my case consists of escaping. What I don’t know, it won’t hurt me.

This is alarming!! I start calling one of my sons and before I say the right name, I’m sure I said other 2 names before. And you have no idea how many times I called the man: “ma” (that’s how I call my mom, they are not even the same sex…).

I forgot several birthdays this year (and the past 3 years). I wish I could forget my birthday though…
Let me think how many times I burned the food this week… Only 2 because I didn’t cook the other 5.

I totally agree about the Internet designed to distract (let’s blame whatever is there to blame)… Crap, just crap. My Internet connection sucks, sometimes it stops working for 2 hours (yes, my heart rate accelerates and I panic during those hours), but even those days when I say: “I’m not using the iPod or computer until I get this done”, it’s not that I sit down and get “that” done… Not at all… I switch tasks. I start sewing, then I leave that half way done, I start painting something, I interrupt that too, I go and make some tea that of course I will forget on the counter and see it one hour later when I finish probably loading the washing mach ine (that will finish the cycle and stay there until I remember).

So now I have this big question: What’s consider social media?

According to wikipedia.org:

Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks.

Some examples are: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress, Flickr, Instagram, etc…
And a graphic to know the difference.

I can’t consider myself a huge social media user. I only use WordPress, YouTube (for some music and to learn how to do something, like “how to mow like a pro” or “remove dust from a screen protector”) and my fake Facebook (and if you are one of my 13 friends you know that I never like, comment or post anything … I only answer the messages).

So if I’m not a big user, why is Social Media affecting my life so much?

(Again, let’s blame something else… It’s so much fun).

  3. This is very interesting and I’m noticing that a book has to be very captivating to engross me, much more so than how it used to be. I always thought it was because I had so much more on my mind now that the children or older, but I have to wonder the part that the computer and social media play in all this. I have no idea why your attention span is so much shorter when your use of the internet is so limited but it may have seeped through the cracks anyway.
