Wednesday. Kids are all different. Some of them won’t tell you a word about their lives or ask you anything and others don’t mind telling you whatever goes through their minds and are not afraid of asking questions.
A few months ago I was in the car together with my ex and my kids and my second son asked me: “Mom, what’s a tampon?”
Oh, crap! My ex started to laugh so I couldn’t play deaf that time. I don’t mind when my kids ask me questions but I feel really uncomfortable when they ask the questions in front of their siblings. Specially the younger ones.
“Mom, what’s a tampon?”
“Yeah, answer that question!” said my ex.
“A tampon is something that women use when…” And thank goodness he interrupted me saying: “Oh yes, the girls in my class got one when we had to see that video about sexual education”.
“WHAT?? They got a tampon?”
“Yes!”
“Are you sure it was a tampon? Or was it a pad, like the ones I use?”
“Ohhh… I see, they got a pad. What are tampons?”
“They are like pads that you use internally” And please God make that the last answer I have to give today because I’m feeling pretty uncomfortable right now.
I think he got the answer he needed and didn’t say anything else.

Last week he came to me again: “Mom, the kids in grade 7 got condoms”
WTF!! “Did they really?”
“Yes… and they were putting them on their heads. Let me show you a picture”

OMG! I wanted to laugh but I didn’t want to do it in front of him. I only wondered if the kids understood that the condom goes on the smaller head and not on the big one.
Anyway, I feel glad that they are laughing about the condoms and not really thinking to use them properly. It gives me hope to think that for now, the big head is ruling.

They are only 12. Maybe it’s a good time for them to know about protection but I still think they are too young to think about sex.
I know it’ll happen soon, before I know it.
I just want my kids to be kids for as long as possible. And when they grow up, never forget that they were once kids.

  1. I agree, it’s too young. They have all of their lives to deal with sex and the complications that it brings.

  2. In my opinion openness is best, probably because my mother never ever gave us a sex education lesson, NOT once it was left to a useless school and as you know there was a major gap in my sex education, and that lack of knowledge caused complications as an adult which I still a regret even today!

So Paola openess is best but I don’t envy you šŸ˜€

  3. This made me smile. , i don’t know why. Mom’s are really wise, They know how to answer difficult questions and end up learning more than the kids. šŸ™‚

  4. yeah, I’m all for planned parenthood and protection but have to wonder if giving condoms to 12 year olds is a little early. It’s like, here, use this…if you’re ready or not.

  5. I agree with Andrew. They’re either going to learn it from a person who understands, or they’re going to learn it from their friends. I never got the sex talk and it was a detriment to me. Thanks for your story and giving me a good laugh.

  6. Hmmm…I guess I can just say knowledge is power., and I’m in the no-sex-talk-club, along with some other commenters. I will say that I definitely knew kids who were already having sex at this age. It’s sad and scary, but it is a reality.

  8. I can tell you from personal experience that 12 is about the age things start heating up, so although it really is too young to be considering it, and it REALLY upsets me that it’s become so common so young now that they deem it necessary to give out condoms so young, experimentation certainly begins :-\

And I have to tell you, putting a condom on the big head could NOT be a more PERfect metaphor! It’s one of the most accurate images I’ve ever seen! lol

  9. Kids grow up really fast… at least that what it feels like to me. If I were to remember really hard, sex was a point of conversation with other kids my age when I was still in elementary, but it was more just talk and brag than anything… I think. What do I know?
