Friday. April Fools’ Day. I’m not really a fan of pranks. I don’t mind the innocent ones but I truly hate the ones that go too far and hurt people.
I remember many years ago I was watching TV and there was a show that played pranks on famous people. There was this woman who was a presenter (?) and she was kind of dumb and naive. I always wondered how someone with so little spark or character could end up on TV. She was an easy prey and as we say in my country, anyone could sell her a mailbox (venderle un buzón: “Mailboxes in Argentina, from its postal service origin until a few decades ago, belonged to the state and were placed in many areas of the street. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the phrase became popular in reference to astute and clever citizens of Buenos Aires trying to “sell a mailbox” to not-too-shrewd or innocent people or newcomers to the metropolis. Since then, the term means to defraud someone, or at least try, abusing the trust or ignorance of the other.”).
So I was watching what they were doing to her and I was commenting to my ex: “She’ll have a heart attack, why don’t they stop it now?”. The woman was barely breathing and shaking. I was getting nervous and shouting at the screen: “Come on! You are going too far, please stop!!” I think I was hyperventilating too, I couldn’t believe they kept the act when it was clear that the woman was about to faint.
I really don’t remember what happened next because I think I stopped watching. I was mad at the TV show and at my ex for not changing the channel.
Why do people like to see the suffering on others or the morbid stuff? It beats me.

And IT’S FRIDAY, I’M IN LOVE and finding a song fool related it’s been hard today! If I like the melody, I hate the lyrics and vice versa.
But I had to pick this one because of the message. I think it’s powerful, even though the melody is not my cup of tea.

And remember: Don’t take anyone’s crap. Today or ever.

Enjoy Avril Lavigne and step up, step up!

NOBODY’S FOOL
(written by Avril Lavigne & Peter Zizzo)

(Step Up, Step Up) Step Up
(Step Up, Step Up) Step Up
(Step Up, Step Up, Step Up
Fall back, take a look at me and you’ll see
I’m for real
I’ll feel what only I can feel
And if that don’t appeal to you, let me know

And I’ll go ’cause I flow
Better when my colors show
And that’s the way it has to be, honestly
‘Cause creativity could never bloom in my room

I’d throw it all away before I’d lie
So don’t call me with a compromise
Hang up the phone
I got a backbone stronger than yours

If you’re trying to turn me into someone else
It’s easy to see I’m not down with that
I’m not nobody’s fool

If you’re trying to turn me in something else
I’ve seen it enough and I’m over that
I’m not nobody’s fool

If you wanna bring me down
Go ahead and try
Go ahead and try

You don’t know, you think you know me like yourself
But I fear that you’re only telling me what I wanna hear
But do you give a damn
Understand that I can’t not be what I am

I’m not the milk and Cheerios in your spoon
It’s not as simple as, “here we go,” not so soon
I might’ve fallen for that when I was fourteen and a little more green
But its amazing what a couple of years can mean

If you’re trying to turn me into someone else
Its easy to see I’m not down with that
I’m not nobody’s fool

If you’re trying to turn me into something else
I’ve seen it enough and I’m over that
I’m not nobody’s fool

If you wanna bring me down
Go ahead and try
Go ahead and try

Go ahead and try, try and look me in the eye
But you’ll never see inside until you realize, realize

Things are trying to settle down
Just triyna to figure out
Exactly what I’m about
If it’s with or without you, I don’t need you doubting me

If you’re trying to turn me into someone else
It’ s easy to see I’m not down with that
I’m not nobody’s fool

If you’re trying to turn me into something else
I’ve seen it enough and I’m over that
I’m not nobody’s fool

If you wanna bring me down
Go ahead and try, try

Would you be laughing out loud
If I played to my own crowd
Try, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Go ahead and try

  3. Oh, that’s awful! Yes, we have an expression in America like the mailbox one that goes something like (if you believe that) I’ve got a bridge to sell you. The premise is that you might by the Brooklyn Bridge.

  4. I don’t get it, either, Paola. I feel exactly the way you do with this. Basically—people can REALLY be assholes and don’t give a damn about the harm they cause :(.

  5. I hate pranks too. I don’t like the mean ones, but all of them make me anxious.

  6. I’m not a fan of the prank shows either. I think they debase people on a level that is just wrong. Some pranking is ok, but some of the stuff people do, I seriously don’t know how they don’t get shot. /boggle
