Monday. I fell asleep like a rock a bit after 10.30pm. I had nightmares and woke up at 3.10am. I couldn’t sleep anymore. I hate when that happens because my mind goes to places I wish they were locked up in my memory. This time: Parasites.
I have no idea why, I remembered when I was 13 or 14 walking with a friend on the street and I saw a girl about my age who was really skinny. The kind of thin that you wonder how the hell the body can hold the head. My friend said to me: “She used to go to my former school, she got parasites”. Holy f#$k. The poor girl looked greenish like a ghost.

Many years later when I went to college, there was a girl in another group who was also greenish, thin and ghostly. I also wondered how her body could hold what it seemed to be a HUGE head. I said to my friend then: “I believe she got parasites”. He looked at me with a WTF face so I had to explain.

I’m not sure if you know, I studied Environmental Sciences. There was quite a lot of biology and zoology to learn. One of the subjects of course, was parasites. I was already creeped out about them and learning more, made me cringe.
The pictures that spoke more than thousand words are engraved in my memory forever. The single parasite doesn’t really scary me in a photograph but the damage it makes in its host, it’s what scares the shit out of me.
I’m not posting any pictures. You can thank me later.

Now imagine how I felt the day I found a parasite coming out of me. I’m not giving any details (and you can also thank me for that later).
The only thing I’ll say it’s that if you think that having parasites is gross, imagine that the cure is 20 times grosser. Starting with the “collecting of samples” and some of the things some doctors make you take.
I know there are pills that you take a couple of times and that’s it. I wish I had done that instead of going to a doctor who specializes in parasites. F#$king NEVER AGAIN.

How I caught the parasite (only one) is a mystery but everything indicates that I could have caught it while I drank the crystal clear and cold water from some streams in the south of Argentina. I thought the water was pristine because it came from the mountains’ ice.
I was wrong. Lesson learned.

And if that wasn’t enough to keep me awake, I remember reading that some years ago many people purposely took parasite eggs with the idea of losing weight.
Can you imagine that? What the f#$k were they thinking?
I’m gagging.

This is for you, Donna. The close-ups.
The frames were hanging in the house when we moved in. They had flowers, landscapes and plates with fruit. I planned to revamp them making a collage.
I used a glue gun to stick the plastic lids and caps (bottles, tubes, jugs and small jars). I collected those to make my art projects.
You can still see the marks where I glued some of them before.
I chose acrylic paint because that’s what I had.
After I finished, I couldn’t read the word HOPE very well so I added some golden paint on the lids to make them more noticeable.

  1. I love the artwork! Yes, the parasite thing is gross but I have to say, the idea of people purposely ingesting them in order to lose weight does not entirely surprise me.

  2. It was not uncommon around the turn of the last century for women to swallow tapeworms to lose weight or keep it off. I will never understand how anyone could do that. Disgusting

  3. Yep I’d say ‘it’ was in the crystal clear water, in the UK if you drink stream water flowing off the Fells then there’s a pretty good chance you’ll get gastroenteritis, but not parasites!

  4. Wow, Paola, I’m so glad you mentioned this post! I had to go back in your archives ’cause I somehow missed this post! I always get them in email and can’t imagine how I missed this one. That really bothers me!

Thank you for posting these. LOVE the look and creativity 😀 😀 😀

And parasites? I feel the same way about them, though you obviously know more than I do!

  5. From parasites to hope.. ok, yeah, I get that transition… o.O (although I prefer the way you did it, because starting with hope and moving to parasites… just wrong)
